A Rumble with the Tumble: A Review of The Tumble's Almanac

It is always exciting to experience an acquaintance's artistic output for the first time- my listen to The Tumble's

Almanac was no exception. Perhaps the thing that I enjoy most about Almanac is the honesty with which it was documented. Artfully produced by Jason Borisoff, this record highlights a young band of songwriters who have a serious admiration for traditional American music but aren't afraid to re-work it within a contemporary context, extrapolating upon the earnestness and simplicity of folk while framing it within a modern sound. Prascher's words seamlessly melt together with the utmost sincerity, an experience beautifully augmented by harmonies by Kitchens and occasionally Legend (both also take lead vocals as well). Further content ranges from Prascher's "Burn Me Down" and "Aldie" and Kitchens' "Next Train Out of Town" to Legend's quirkier aesthetic, reflected in tunes like "I'm Going to Mars" and "When the Zombies Come." When paired beside bluegrass standards by Bill Monroe and Ola Belle Reed as well as more contemporary covers by bands ranging from Best Coast to Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, the band becomes contextualized as a group with diverse interest and experience. Likewise, the average bluegrass listener shouldn't expect to be bombarded with virtuosic, trailing solos- this is songwriter's record and simplicity is an ally in exposing earnest lyrics penned for this recording.

This record has much to take away. I would consider the beautiful mix and vocal aesthetic alone to make the album a worthwhile listen to all music lovers, regardless of background in the idioms of folk and bluegrass.
